Cleaning a bike tank is easy. Remove the tank and all it's parts like speeometer and speedo bezel. Dump out old fuel. Tape over the tank badges just in case. Leave the petcock in the tank. Pour in 1 cup or so of fresh, high octane fuel. Reinstall the gas cap, shake the tank for a minute or so, and carefully remove the petcock. Stand tank on blocks to angle fuel toward petcock hole in tank base. Not all the fuel will come out, don't worry about it. Reinstall tank, add high octane fuel. Ride for a couple of hours or until the bike starts behaving properly.
Cleanin a carb is a pain in the ass. Easiest way is to remove it, take off the bottom float bow. Spray carb and inside of bowl with carb cleaner. Spray the piston inside the throat also. Put back together and reinstall. Go for a long ride with good fuel. Should be the end of the problem.
Good luck, have fun, stale gasoline stinks something fierce.
